In The Right Way
I Look to the sky
Where planes have become our eagles.
Streetlights, our stars.
Looking at our phones
at sunrise and sunset
to forget who we are.
Where the workplace is our temple
and money is our god,
Our Spirits are trapped in bottles
as traffic sings our birdsongs.
Where is the hummingbird?
Where does he find his flowers?
Which way does the sunrise?
We can’t see past the towers.
Plastic shoes to protect us from the concrete,
Concrete to protect us from the earth.
Why can’t we feel her any more?
Why have you taken us from her?
“The earth makes me dirty,
And I only want
Animals as a pet,
The Rain is bad
Cause I get wet.
I don’t care about plants
All they bring to my house
are ants,
I only sing when I drink,
and I need drugs to dance.
My water comes from the sink,
My food comes from the fridge.
I don’t need to know how to light a fire,
I’ve been told what to think.”
You say Indigenous were so undeveloped,
But development at what cost?
We will leave you in the forest,
And you’ll probably get lost.
We know our way home,
We talk to the old people.
The mountains, the trees, the stars.
They know who we are.
We don’t need to worry,
and we don't have time for a sorry.
Just take your hands out of the quarry,
and together let’s walk this new story.
Don’t forget who you are,
We all came from the same star.
So we are all one,
Children of the same sun.
Moon sung us to sleep,
Sun came this morning to see our hearts
Wind breathed in our lungs,
Water is forming the new path.
They said learn to remember
and remember to learn.
They told me when a old person dies,
a library is burned.
Our elders are disappearing,
they’ve gone upstairs
for the big clearing.
They will talk to you,
Only If you start hearing.
But it’s too loud in the city,
Where Connection means electricity.
That way of being can only lead to self pity,
loosing truth and authenticity.
The elite want to fly to space,
and time doesn’t wait.
So let’s gather our families
and find a quiet place,
So we can start again
...
In The Right Way.
